The Mavericks

Michael Perry

With a Cuban-American lead singer, garage band ferocity, an intense live show and a deep love of both romance and pure country laced with polyrhythmic beats — The Mavericks might have been unlikely superstars. Yet, their raucous sound broke ground for the Country format with hits like “Here Comes The Rain,” “Crying Shame,” “Dance The Night Away” and “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down” and scored the group industry awards in prestigious categories including Vocal Group and Album of the Year.  A hiatus for the band in 2004 led members Raul Malo, Paul Deakin, Eddie Perez and Jerry Dale McFadden in different directions until the 2013 release of In Time.  Their first album and major tour in nearly twenty years topped many critics’ Best Of  lists, including American Songwriter, The Boston Globe, NPR, Los Angeles Times and New York Magazine.

Backstage Monologue

In this episode’s monologue – delivered from the backstage dressing room with the one lonely little lightbulb burnin’ – Mike tells of a night not fit for a tent.
